A captivating lead vocal, soaring three-part sibling harmonies, and indie rocking guitar bass drums and keys are what you’ll find on James Patrick Carey’s latest release: Scoundrels & Saints. After getting kicked out of England, spending a few years in Nashville, and now living just outside Los Angeles, James decided to return home to Minnesota to record his sophomore effort. He enlisted the help of his brother Joe to produce the record, along with playing guitar and singing backups. Together they sifted through 40 of Jim’s best songs and chose the 12 that stick together like musical glue. What you get is an eclectic mix of soulful rock and alt-country that fans of Ryan Adams, Lenny Kravitz, and Vintage Trouble would surely put on their favorite playlists. James’ sister, Jessica, rounds out the abundant vocal harmonies recorded at The Brewhouse Studio in Minneapolis. Only vintage instruments were used on this album. From the sultry sounds of the Wurlitzer on Cover Your Colours, to the seductive Hammond B3 on Oh No, and lest we forget the vast array of electric and acoustic guitars throughout, this collection of tunes will please even the most eccentric of indie audiophiles.

What makes Scoundrels & Saints unique? James, also a keyboard player, doesn’t only have a richly textured voice, he knows how to use it. We’re not talking about male-diva vocal acrobatics, we’re talking about telling a story. He drips emotion: being dark and soulful, vulnerable and pleading, or just pissed off. Most of all he is believable! With intelligent heartfelt lyrics and melodic hooks, the singer songwriter weaves a tangled web of fiery passion, sleeve soaking apologies, and being on both sides of a breakup. Scoundrels & Saints is honest, from the heart, and will surely stay in your head for a long time.
