It's been a while since I've posted anything here. I've been writing a lot lately so stay tuned! Meanwhile, here's a video of The Budapest Scoring Orchestra recording strings for my tune, All You Want. I've been meaning to post this for a while, so here goes! This was recorded in December of 2017 as I was finishing up the different sessions for Picasso's Brush. Douglas Pipes, a good friend and musical accomplice, immensely helped me write this arrangement. He also put me in touch with the orchestra. It was truly a great experience. Personally, when it's available, I like to listen to outtakes or isolated tracks of the music that I like. So I thought, why not post the "isolated strings track" to one of my own songs? Go ahead and click over here to listen to the full track to compare. I hope you enjoy!

Announcing the presale and release dates for Picasso's Brush!

Presale everywhere on October 5th. And the official release date is November 2nd.

With the presale you get to instantly download Weekend (a surefire hit), while the rest of the album will be automatically downloaded on November 2nd. So get the presale because everyone is going to be talking about it at school and you want to be one of the cool kids. Don't ya?

And take a look at the cover below! After two attempts at photo sessions and not seeing a cover, my girlfriend and I borrowed her awesome friend's awesome camera. Meanwhile my brother, who works in fine art, suggested using an actual photo of Picasso's brushes. There's one in particular that would have been great, but it also would have been expensive. So why not dirty up some brushes of my own? I went to the local craft store and bought a bunch of brushes and paints and some canvasses, created a huge mess, and attempted my first paintings. The first one was kind of a bust, but the second one? Album cover!

See you on October 5th...and November 2nd! Can't wait! Oh yeah...and click the album cover.

Hey all! Here's an update on what's been happening since I last let y'all know what the shizzy was. I'm nearing the finish line with my latest album Picasso's Brush. All of the recording went swimmingly in October and November. I returned home to California and finished up the piano parts at Cantaloupe Studio in LA with Douglas Pipes lending his engineering talents. Doug also lent his true expertise helping me to arrange one of the songs for a 40 piece string orchestra! The Budapest Scoring Orchestra in Hungary did a magnificent job, I even got a bunch of video from the session. After that was all finished I shipped the material up to Greg Schutte who recorded and then mixed everything. Being the ever (annoying) perfectionist, I flew back up to Minnesota in May to help polish up the mix a bit and came home very happy. The question then was, "who the hell do I go to for mastering?" For those of you who don't know, the final process in recording an album is called mastering. It's when a very specialized engineer takes all of the songs and puts a final polish on them. It's actually much more complicated than that...but only Sith Lords are allowed know what mastering is truly about. But I digress! Bob Thiele is a guy who was kind enough to respond to one of my emails a few years ago on my last album. He was the music supervisor for all of the Sons Of Anarchy music. His response years ago was something like, "good job!" So I thought I'd email him again on the off chance that he'd respond. The email was pretty simple, "I don't know anything about mastering. Do you? If so, can you point me in a direction?" Lo and behold the guy responded within an hour and told me that he knows nothing but that he trusts his music with Howie Weinberg. After looking at Howie's website I thought there was no way he'd work on my stuff. The guy mastered Nevermind by Nirvana and Hysteria by Def Leppard for God's sake...among a ton of other legendary records. But I thought, what the hell, and called him anyway. He was a hell of a nice guy and said all the right things. "I'll make your stuff sound beautiful. You'll love it. I'll work magic." He certainly talked the talk, but he most definitely has walked the walk, so I believed him! A few days later I went to his house in one of the LA "canyons" in order to give a listen and to pay him. On my way there I got a little nervous because I realized, without knowing his name, I've been admiring his work for decades: Prince, Smashing Pumpkins, The Killers, The Black Crowes, The Jayhawks...and the list goes on. This is THE guy I want mastering my music...and it's actually happening! I got to his house and after a friendly hello he showed me to his mastering suite and pressed play. The whole house shook with how beautifully loud it was. I was utterly blown away, and still am. I've said this before but I'll say it again, the lesson I'm taking home from this is - if you think something is impossible, try it anyway! So to finish this long and yet unfinished story and to try to condense, I'm now talking to a graphic designer to do the art work, and the CD replicator where everything will eventually end up. All of this should be wrapping up within the next few weeks. Which means a release date of Octoberish! Stay tuned for more. And THANK YOU for reading!

Hello hello!

So excited about the new record! 10 days of recording at The Bathtub Shrine recording studio in Minneapolis are finished. It was an amazing experience with some old and new faces on this one. You'll be happy to know that my brother and sister, Joe and Jess, are returning with vigor. Expect a lot of vocal harmony from all 3 of us on this round of tunes, along with Joe's tasty guitar treats. He and I are also sharing the producer chair...don't worry, no fights broke out...well maybe a couple. Also in the performance room are returning bass player, Nick Salisbury; and new (to me) drummer, Jordan Carlson. Epic jobs were done by these guys. Behind the glass, engineering and mixing the project is Greg Schutte, who has a truly great place and mind for music making. There will be some surprises too with some string arrangements, and perhaps some bagpipes. Currently, I'm just finishing up the recording process before Greg works his mixing magic. The legendary Douglas Pipes is lending his studio and arranging expertise to this fine piece of work, and I'm so very grateful. To him and to all! Expect a release in early 2018! It will be called PICASSO'S BRUSH. Stay tuned here at the website and I will make sure to keep you up to date!

I hope everyone’s holidays were wonderful and spent with people you love. I spent a few days in Minnesota with my family. All 5 siblings were present, and of course Mom and Dad. It was grand! Christmas was white (which is awesome), and cold (which is ok in small doses, but -11F is pushing it). I flew back to California on Christmas Day and my brother Jason joined me a few days later. He lives in London and decided to spend some time in a warm climate for some R&R before heading back across the pond. It was great to have him here and show him around. OK, enough about that stuff and down to business: my record, Scoundrels & Saints!

The finishing touches are being made right now. All of the sonic stuff is done, Kristen Stegman was gracious enough to take some photos of me, Rob Genadek did a wonderful job mastering the songs, and now it’s just design and a couple of other things before I send it off to get it pressed. This all brings me to some news:

My brother Joe and I have decided to do a double CD release party, both his and mine! It’s going to be on March 8th at The Aster Café in Minneapolis! This is the night before my birthday, so I expect you ALL to be there!!! More details to come, so stay tuned.

I hope everyone has an amazing 2014 filled with great music, love, and prosperity! Thanks for taking a look at my page and I’ll see you all soon!

OK so it's exactly one month after we have finished recording. First I have to say that it could not have gone any better if it were a dream! Everyone was on fire in the studio. Nick Salisbury, Ben Kaplan, Rob Genadek, Jessica Carey, and Joe Carey you are my HEROES! If anyone is considering recording an album I highly recommend The Brewhouse Studio. Perhaps I will put some video up as I very loosely kept a video blog during that 2 week period. I've decided on a title: Scoundrels And Saints. And Joe and I are working on details for a CD release party to happen in March 2014. In the mean time I have to get everything mastered, take some photos, get some artwork done, and a ton of other things. I will keep y'all posted with every step though. I do have to say that it sounds great and I can't wait to get it out there for other people to hear!

There is a video that our Dad took that I'd like to post, but I think it might be too big. Anyway, there is a song called Clouds and basically the whole thing is done as a 3 part vocal that Joe and Jess and I all wrote together. This is how the video happened: I wanted to try to record all of our vocals at the same time (Side note: it's quite uncommon to record more than one vocal at a time in a studio because everybody has to be spot-on the whole time. One person makes a mistake, and the whole track has to be redone). I asked Rob the studio master if we could give it a shot and he said it wouldn't be a problem. I haven't ever recorded 3 part in the same room at the same time....it was pretty wonderful. Our parents were there at the time, so we asked our Dad to come in and take some video of us as we tracked. The video he took is the take that we ended up keeping and it's fun (at least to me) to watch. You can only hear us singing and no music as we all have headphones on. So we'll see if I can get that up here on the website.

Oh and lastly, I just put up a bunch of studio pics on the photo page. Take a gander.

Hoping you're all doing great. Thanks for stopping by.

Cheers

Hey Everyone, it's Jim!

Well here it is. Finally my own little website. I'm doing "James Patrick Carey" (my actual full name) for obvious reasons. If you don't know, climb out from the rock under which you live and go see a movie (his latest as of Sept '13 is Kick Ass 2). Anyway, I'm about to head back to Minnesota to do another record. My brother Joe is producing it and playing guitar. Also Nick Salisbury and Ben Kaplan are playing bass and drums, respectively. And of course my amazingly talented sister, Jessica, will be singing a bunch on it. Collectively, with Joe at the helm, they've turned my songs into something much better than I ever could have done alone. I feel very blessed to be working with all of them. Expect the release to be in January or February 2014. Can't wait to get it out there!

Since you're here, take a look around. Head over to the STORE and listen to snippets of my first release, Juliet Avenue (2002). You can also purchase single songs or the whole album by clicking on VIEW in the iTunes window.

Take a look under TUNES and listen to full songs that haven't been released. These songs won't be on the upcoming record either, I just wanted to put them out there. More pictures, songs, and blogs will be posted over time. If you have something to say, please leave me a comment here or under CONTACT.

And be sure to sign up for the email list in the upper left corner of the page!

Hope all is well with you, and thanks for paying a visit. Now go tell all your friends!

Peace
